Dusty Rose Kora Jamdani silk saree with Banarasi Border

A soft, dusty rose ground gives this Kora Jamdani silk saree its warmth — a pink that reads closer to old terracotta than to candy, and one that takes antique gold zari particularly well. The body is patterned with small floral butis in close rows, diamond-shaped kalga medallions filled with pink, coral and mustard resham, and long scalloped jhaalar swags that hang between them like drawn garlands.

The border is a contrast red band carrying a floral jaal in gold and cream zari, the vine turning through lotus heads and paisley tips along its length. Just inside it, fine zari stripes and a narrower vine band ease the drape from rose into red. The pallu carries a large chandrakala mandala — concentric rings of zari scallop and openwork vine radiating out from a single flower, with blooms picked out in coral, pink, green and mustard around the outer band, so the gold circle is ringed in colour. The unstitched blouse piece is a red brocade covered in gold zari kalgas, finished with a red and zari striped edge.

Meenakari on a Banarasi loom is brocade with colour let into the gold. The medallion is first drawn in zari — its scallops, its radiating vine, its centre flower — and then coloured resham is introduced bloom by bloom inside that frame, each shade carried on its own small shuttle, worked in and cut off, the way enamel is set into a gold jewel. Nothing repeats automatically: the weaver reads the design from the naksha and places every colour by hand. The chandrakala at the pallu is drawn in openwork so the ground reads through the vine, and the jhaalar swags across the body come from the same architectural grammar of arches and hanging garlands that runs through Banaras design.
