Marigold Orange Kota Saree with Patan Patola Fusion Border and Zari Butis

Turmeric-bright and light as air, this Marigold Orange Kota Saree pairs the open square weave of Kota with the pattern language of Patan patola. The body carries two butis in alternation — small floral sprigs worked in gold zari with pink and coral resham, and tiny ivory stars set between them — spaced closely enough to give the ground a scattered, sunlit texture without weighing it down.

The border begins with a deep maroon patola band, its interlocking motifs picked out in ivory, red, green and mustard with the stepped, feathered edges that only yarn-resist patterning produces, framed above and below by an ivory sawtooth rule. Below it runs a red band lined with fine orange and yellow stripes. The pallu widens the same idea: a broad red patola panel filled with ivory floral rosettes, closed by a gold zari tissue band and finished with a row of red silk tassels. The unstitched blouse piece is plain red silk scattered with tiny gold zari butis.

Kota's character comes from its khat weave — cotton and silk yarns alternated in groups so the cloth leaves the loom as a grid of fine open squares. It is what makes the fabric so light and faintly transparent, and it is worked on a traditional pit loom where the weaver has to hold the tension steady for the squares to stay true down the length. Patola works on a different principle entirely: the design is tied and dyed into the yarn before a single pick is woven, and because the pattern is carried in the threads themselves, the motifs emerge with the soft stepped outline that gives patola its signature. Setting patola bands against a plain Kota body is a deliberate fusion — the featherweight weave of Rajasthan carrying the pattern grammar of Gujarat, with the pallu weighted just enough by a zari tissue band and tassels to make the drape hang well.

The Kota base comes from Kaithoon, near Kota in Rajasthan, where the khat weave has been worked on pit looms for generations and remains a household craft. The patola vocabulary belongs to Patan and Rajkot in Gujarat, home of the double-ikat tradition, where the tie-and-dye grammar of interlocking rosettes and stepped diamonds has been passed down through families of weavers.
