Orchid Lilac Kora Kanchivaram Silk Saree with Gold and Silver Zari Elephant Jaal

A Kanchivaram woven on kora silk — crisp, light, and covered almost end to end in zari. The orchid lilac ground is set into a hexagonal lattice, and inside each cell sits a motif in silver or gold zari: elephants in procession, annam birds, and lotus heads, alternating so the grid reads as a scattered menagerie rather than a repeat. Because gold and silver are used together, the jaal shifts in tone as the drape moves, silver catching first and gold holding the light longer.

The border is wide and dense — bands of temple figures and elephants worked in gold zari between paisley and geometric rules, with the whole width edged by a thin contrast orange selvedge that keeps the lilac from bleeding into the gold. The pallu is heavier still: broad gold zari panels layered with paisley, temple and lattice bands, finished along the fall with a small pointed zari lace trim. The blouse comes ready-stitched in matching lilac kora silk, with zari brocade sleeve bands and a neckline hand-embroidered in gold beadwork.

Kanchipuram weaving is built around zari, and a jaal like this one is the demanding end of it. Each motif in the lattice is worked by hand as the weaving advances, with the metallic weft brought in only where the elephant or lotus falls and cut away behind it — which is why the reverse of a true Kanchivaram shows the cut ends rather than long floats. Using gold and silver together doubles the work, since the two shuttles have to be alternated cell by cell without the lattice losing its line. The wide border and pallu are woven at far greater zari density than the body, and the contrast selvedge is worked into the edge as the weaving progresses so the two colours interlock rather than sit as a seam.

This saree is handwoven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu — the temple town whose weavers have worked silk and zari for centuries, and whose motif vocabulary of elephants, annam birds, lotus and temple figures comes directly from the sculpture of the region's gopurams. Kora, the lighter undegummed silk, is a more recent addition to the cluster's repertoire, woven for drapes that carry heavy zari without the weight of traditional korvai silk.
