A bright red Kanchivaram silk saree with ornate canopy buttas woven in gold zari across the body, each topped with a silver zari parrot. The wide gold zari border shows a row of elephants with patterned coverings, set between herringbone bands and a diamond lattice. The pallu is richly woven in gold zari, with rows of elephants and birds in dense bands above an all-over diamond pattern, and it ends in tassels. A matching red blouse piece with an elephant zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions, and it is a piece for lovers of traditional temple motifs.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: matching red with an elephant zari border
Body: gold zari canopy buttas with silver zari parrots
Border: wide gold zari elephant border with herringbone bands and a diamond lattice
Pallu: gold zari elephant and bird bands over an all-over diamond pattern, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border. The canopy and parrot buttas, the elephant border and the elephant bands in the pallu are all woven in zari on the loom. Each figure takes careful setting of the warp and weft, and the finished weave has a raised, rich texture.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and processions, including elephants, parrots, peacocks and lattice patterns.
