Weaving Glory: Celebrating India’s Saree Heritage Through Kuppadam and Tangalia Crafts

At The Saffron House, we believe that every saree tells a story—not just of threads and motifs, but of communities, heritage, and hope.

Today, we shine a light on two extraordinary stories from India’s weaving heartlands—each a symbol of cultural pride and artisanal resilience.

🧵 Kuppadam Sarees from Chirala: A National Honour

In a proud moment for Andhra Pradesh, the exquisite Kuppadam silk sarees from the weaving town of Chirala have received national recognition under India’s One District One Product (ODOP) initiative. These sarees, known for their signature temple borders and soft silk-cotton blend, are handcrafted on traditional pit looms—a technique passed down for generations.

What makes this news even more special? Innovators like Bitra Pullaiah have upgraded the traditional shuttle to help weavers craft broader zari borders—up to 15 inches—without sacrificing the soul of the saree. This has opened new doors for exports and recognition, ensuring more stable livelihoods for the artisan families of Chirala.

🧶 Tangalia Weaving & a Padma Shri Legacy

From the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, Lavjibhai Parmar has been awarded the Padma Shri for preserving and modernizing the 700-year-old Tangalia weaving technique.

What is Tangalia? It’s a rare art that involves tying and twisting extra weft yarns to create intricate, dot-patterned designs—visible on both sides of the fabric. Lavjibhai not only revived this technique but also set up training centers, encouraged younger artisans, and expanded into contemporary products like stoles and sarees.

Thanks to his vision, Tangalia sarees are now being showcased on global stages.
