Three traditions meet on one drape. The body is Kota — pale pistachio green, woven in the open khat structure that gives the cloth its fine square grid, with gold zari lines running through the checks so the ground shimmers faintly without any motif on it at all. Left plain like this, the weave itself is the pattern.

The border is where the fusion happens. A band of Patan patola design runs first: interlocking diamonds in bottle green, rust, ivory and yellow, their edges stepped and feathered the way double-ikat resolves. Below it sits a wide bottle green brocade band with a gold zari paisley and floral jaal, edged in fine rani pink and ivory lines that read as a beaded rule from a distance. The pallu carries the same sequence at greater width — patola band, zari jaal, then a broad panel of gold zari diamond lattice — so the fall is the heaviest part of the saree against the airiest body. The unstitched blouse piece is bottle green silk covered in a floral brocade jaal, with roses and blossom clusters in red, rani pink, coral and mustard resham on gold zari vines.

Kota's defining feature is its khat weave — cotton and silk yarns alternated in groups so the cloth comes off the loom as a grid of fine open squares. It is what makes Kota so light and faintly transparent, and it is done on a traditional pit loom where the weaver keeps the tension even enough for the squares to stay true across metres of cloth. Patola belongs to an entirely different logic: the pattern is tied and dyed into the yarn before weaving, and because both warp and weft carry it, the motifs meet on the loom rather than being laid onto the cloth — which is why patola diamonds always have that stepped, slightly feathered outline. Setting a patola band and a zari brocade jaal against a plain Kota body is a deliberate fusion: the weightless weave of Rajasthan carrying the pattern language of Gujarat.

The Kota base comes from Kaithoon, near Kota in Rajasthan, where the khat weave has been worked on pit looms for generations and remains a household craft. The patola vocabulary belongs to Patan and Rajkot in Gujarat, home of the double-ikat tradition, and the zari brocade banding follows the Banarasi grammar of paisley and floral jaal.
