A rich bottle green Kanchivaram silk saree with fine gold zari checks across the body. Woven peacock and round medallion buttas sit inside the checks. The wide gold zari border has a woven lattice pattern between narrow motif bands, and a contrast magenta selvedge sets it off. The pallu carries a band of paired peacocks in gold zari above an all-over diamond zari weave, and it ends in tassels. A matching bottle green blouse piece with a gold zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: matching bottle green with a gold zari border
Body: gold zari checks with peacock and round buttas
Border: wide gold zari lattice border with motif bands and a magenta edge
Pallu: peacock band over an all-over diamond zari weave, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border. The zari checks, the peacock and round buttas, and the peacock band in the pallu are all woven on the loom. Each design takes careful setting of the warp and weft, and the finished weave has a raised, rich texture.

Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and nature, including peacocks, medallions, checks and lattice patterns.
