A soft beige Kanchivaram silk saree with hand painted Kalamkari work, done with natural dyes from our own designs. The body is painted with the Ashta Lakshmi, the eight forms of the goddess Lakshmi, each seated on a lotus pedestal inside a rope-edged circular frame in teal and brown. Lines of Telugu script run alongside the paintings. The wide rose pink border is woven in a shimmering gold tissue zari with small motif bands. The pink pallu is woven in the same tissue zari with a delicate diamond pattern and paisley edge bands, and it ends in fringes. A matching rose pink blouse piece with a gold zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals, Varalakshmi Vratham, Diwali and other auspicious occasions, and it is a piece for collectors of hand painted textiles.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: matching rose pink with a gold zari border
Body: hand painted Kalamkari in natural dyes, from our own designs
Border: gold tissue zari with small motif bands
Pallu: tissue zari with a diamond pattern, paisley edge bands and fringes
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months. Avoid direct sunlight and damp, as natural dyes can fade.
Kalamkari is an Indian art of painting on fabric with natural dyes, using a pen (kalam) to draw and fill the design by hand. The outlines are drawn first, and the colours are then applied in stages, with each colour coming from plant, mineral or other natural sources. On this saree, the Kalamkari panel is hand painted from our own designs, showing the Ashta Lakshmi on lotus seats within circular frames, with Telugu script alongside. The Kanchivaram weave frames the painting. Its zari border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked with the body for strength.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and tradition, including borders, paisleys and geometric patterns. This saree brings together that weaving tradition and the Kalamkari painting tradition of South India.
