A vibrant red ikat silk saree woven with bold Patola-style motifs in maroon, pink, mustard and green. The body shows diamond lattices with stylised elephants, birds and flowers, set between fine striped and floral bands. A wide border runs along both sides and the pallu end, hand-embroidered in gold zari with floral and leaf motifs, sequins and small stones. The pallu carries rich ikat bands in the same palette, with a bold mustard and teal panel at the start. A matching red blouse piece with fine gold zari stripes comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and special occasions.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: plain red with fine gold zari stripes
Body: ikat diamond lattice with elephants, birds and flowers
Border: hand-embroidered gold zari with sequins and stones, on both sides and the pallu end
Pallu: ikat floral bands with a mustard and teal panel at the start
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique in which sections of the yarn are tied and dyed in the planned colours before weaving. The weaver then aligns the threads on the loom so the pattern appears, with the softly feathered edges that mark ikat. It takes careful planning and skill. On this saree, artisans then embroider the border by hand with zari thread, sequins and small stones. This gives a raised, jewelled finish that frames the ikat.

Ikat is woven in several regions of India, and each has its own motifs and colours. This design draws on the Patola tradition, with its diamond lattices, elephants, birds and flowers. Weaving families have passed this craft down through generations.
