Weaving Glory: Celebrating India’s Saree Heritage Through Kuppadam and Tangalia Crafts

Celebrating India's saree heritage means celebrating the people who keep it alive. At The Saffron House, we believe every saree tells a story, of threads and motifs, and also of the communities and hopes woven into them.

Here we turn to two remarkable stories from India's weaving heartlands, Kuppadam and Tangalia, each a source of cultural pride and a sign of artisanal resilience.

Kuppadam Silk Sarees from Chirala: A National Honour

In a proud moment for Andhra Pradesh, the Kuppadam silk sarees of the weaving town of Chirala have received national recognition under India's One District One Product (ODOP) initiative. Known for their signature temple borders and soft silk-cotton blend, these sarees are handcrafted on traditional pit looms, a technique passed down through generations.

There is more to the story. Innovators like Bitra Pullaiah have upgraded the traditional shuttle so that weavers can create broader zari borders, up to 15 inches wide, without losing the character of the saree. The change has opened new doors for exports and recognition, and it supports more stable livelihoods for the artisan families of Chirala.

Tangalia Weaving and a Padma Shri Legacy

From the Saurashtra region of Gujarat comes the story of Lavjibhai Parmar, who has been awarded the Padma Shri for preserving and modernising the 700-year-old Tangalia weaving technique.

What is Tangalia weaving?

Tangalia is a rare craft in which extra weft yarns are tied and twisted to form intricate, dotted designs that show on both sides of the fabric. Lavjibhai revived the technique, set up training centres, encouraged younger artisans and carried the weave into contemporary products such as stoles and sarees.

Thanks to his vision, Tangalia sarees are now being showcased on global stages.

Why Kuppadam and Tangalia Matter to The Saffron House
