Why buying wedding sarees from India still matters
Brides-to-be, mothers planning a daughter’s wedding and collectors of Indian textiles all tend to discover the same thing: genuine handwoven sarees are hard to find in the US. Many Indian clothing stores carry a limited selection, often at a significant markup, and it is difficult to tell whether a saree is truly handwoven or a power-loom imitation.
Buying directly from a trusted source in India opens up a far wider selection, handloom quality checked at the source, and pricing without the international retail premium. The question has always been how to choose something as tactile as a silk saree without being there in person.
How video saree shopping works at The Saffron House
That question is exactly why we created our video appointment service. Here is how it works.
Step 1: Book a video appointment through our website or call us at +1 469-369-9100. Tell us the occasion (wedding, reception, engagement or festival), your colour preferences, your budget range, and any regional weaving traditions you love.
Step 2: During the call, our saree consultant shows you sarees in real time from our store, holding them up to natural light so you can see the true colour, the drape and the shine of the zari. Ask them to zoom in on the weave, the pallu or the border whenever you like.
Step 3: Once you have chosen, we process the order and ship it directly to your US address. International shipping typically takes 7 to 14 business days, depending on your location.
The service has been especially popular with customers in Dallas, the Bay Area, New Jersey, Virginia and Houston, cities with large Indian communities and plenty of weddings to plan.
Building a wedding trousseau: which sarees you need
A traditional Indian wedding trousseau usually includes sarees for several functions. Here is a practical way to plan your collection.
For the wedding ceremony or muhurtham: A bridal Kanjivaram in deep red, magenta or gold is the most traditional choice for South Indian ceremonies. For North Indian weddings, a richly embellished Banarasi silk saree is the classic. Budget: ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000.
For the reception: A brocade Kanjivaram or a Paithani in jewel tones makes a striking reception look. Pastels work beautifully if you prefer something softer and more contemporary. Budget: ₹30,000 to ₹80,000.
For the engagement or sangeet: A lighter silk such as Banarasi organza or a tissue Kanjivaram pairs well with contemporary jewellery. Budget: ₹20,000 to ₹50,000.
For haldi and mehendi: A bright yellow or green cotton silk or Bandhini saree is both traditional and practical for these informal, colourful functions. Budget: ₹5,000 to ₹15,000.
For gifting to your mother-in-law, sisters and close family: Put together a mix of Korvai Kanjivarams and Banarasi silks in the ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 range. Saree gifting is a cherished tradition, and a genuine handwoven saree from India means far more than anything picked up locally.
For the heirloom piece: If you want one saree to be handed down through the family, consider a Patan Patola or a Collector’s Edit Kanjivaram. These are investment pieces, and they only grow more precious as these weaving traditions become rarer. Budget: ₹80,000 to ₹2,00,000 and above.
