A cream Kanchivaram silk saree with hand painted Kalamkari work, done with natural dyes from our own designs. The concept is a village festival. The body is painted as a lively celebration, with dancing and devotional figures, Lord Ganesha, ornate pillars, lotuses, trees and stylised clouds, all in soft earthy colours of mustard, coral, teal and olive. The wide border is woven in shimmering gold tissue zari with a fine pattern and is edged with a lilac selvedge. The pallu is woven in the same tissue zari. It ends in a hand painted Kalamkari motif band and soft fringes. A matching cream blouse piece with gold zari stripes and a gold zari border comes with the saree. It suits festivals, weddings and auspicious occasions, and it is a piece for collectors of hand painted textiles.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: matching cream with gold zari stripes and a gold zari border
Body: hand painted Village Festival Kalamkari in natural dyes, from our own designs
Border: gold tissue zari with a lilac edge
Pallu: gold tissue zari with a hand painted Kalamkari motif band and fringes
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months. Avoid direct sunlight and damp, as natural dyes can fade.
Kalamkari is an Indian art of painting on fabric with natural dyes, using a pen (kalam) to draw and fill the design by hand. The outlines are drawn first, and the colours are then applied in stages, with each colour coming from plant, mineral or other natural sources. On this saree, the Kalamkari panel is hand painted from our own designs. It tells a story of a village festival through its figures, pillars, lotuses and trees. The Kanchivaram weave frames the painting. Its tissue zari border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked with the body for strength.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and the life around it, including borders, pillars and festival traditions. This saree brings together that weaving tradition and the Kalamkari painting tradition of South India.
