A soft cream Kanchivaram silk saree with round buttas in gold zari across the plain body. A panel of pale green checks and stripes with fine gold lines leads into the pallu. The narrow border is woven in gold zari with paisleys and medallions, and it is edged with a deep pink and red selvedge. The rose pink pallu is richly woven in gold zari, with peacocks inside square frames, set between floral and diamond patterns, and it ends in tassels. A matching dusty pink blouse piece with a zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and day functions.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: dusty pink with a zari border
Body: cream with round gold zari buttas and a green check panel
Border: narrow gold zari paisley and medallion border with a pink and red edge
Pallu: rose pink with peacocks in square frames, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong join and a bold contrast between the cream body and the pink pallu. The buttas, the check panel and the peacock frames in the pallu are woven on the loom in zari and silk, with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple art and nature, including peacocks, paisleys, medallions and floral patterns.
