A Kanchivaram silk saree with the body woven in broad vertical stripes of cream, peach and parrot green. Each stripe carries a fine zari pattern of scrolls, diamonds and medallions, which gives the body a rich, textured shimmer. The border is a plain mustard yellow with fine gold zari lines along its edge, and the body meets it in a soft blended edge. The mustard pallu carries large squares of fine gold zari lines, and it ends in tassels. A matching mustard blouse piece with small gold zari buttas comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and day functions, and the bright stripes against a clean mustard make it a cheerful choice.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: mustard with small gold zari buttas
Body: cream, peach and parrot green stripes with zari patterns
Border: plain mustard with fine gold zari lines
Pallu: mustard with large gold zari squares, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong join and a clear contrast between the striped body and the mustard border and pallu. The patterned stripes are woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft. The squares in the pallu and the small buttas in the blouse are woven in fine gold zari.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple art and geometry, including scrolls, medallions, diamonds and stripes.
