A dual tone purple Kanchivaram silk saree that shifts between indigo and violet in the light. Fine magenta lines form a check across the body, and small floral sprig buttas in gold zari are scattered inside the squares. The wide teal border is woven in gold zari with peacocks among curling creepers, flowers and leaves, framed by narrow bands of small blossoms and zigzags, and edged with a lime green selvedge. The teal pallu repeats the peacock border above a field of fine vertical zari stripes with small heart and leaf patterns, and a narrow teal band separates it from the body. A matching plain teal blouse piece with the peacock zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and special occasions, and the purple and teal pairing is a rich, vibrant choice.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: plain teal with a peacock zari border
Weave: dual tone
Body: purple with magenta checks and gold zari sprig buttas
Border: wide teal gold zari peacock and creeper border with a lime green edge
Pallu: peacock border over fine vertical zari stripes with small heart and leaf patterns
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border and a bold contrast between the purple body and the teal border. The dual tone effect comes from weaving the warp and weft in two different colours, so the silk changes shade as it moves. The checks and sprig buttas are woven on the loom, and the peacock and creeper border and the striped pallu are woven in zari, with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on nature and temple art, including peacocks, creepers, flowers and leaves.
