A steel blue Kanchivaram brocade silk saree, woven all over in a fine gold zari jaal of flowers, creepers and scrolls that gives it a soft antique shimmer. Just above the border, a small panel is woven in kora, a lighter, crisper weave, in a soft olive gold. It carries rows of leaf-shaped buttas in gold zari with teal accents. The wide gold zari border has a fine diamond pattern, narrow teal and green stripes and a bright green selvedge. The pallu repeats the gold zari jaal, with a herringbone band and a floral edge. A matching steel blue blouse piece with a gold zari border and green edge comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and special occasions, and the cool blue with gold is a refined choice.

Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border. The body is a brocade with fine zari woven through it in a jaal pattern, so it glows softly and shifts shade in the light. A small kora panel above the border adds a lighter, crisper texture and carries the leaf buttas in gold and teal. The border and pallu are woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on nature and temple art, including creepers, flowers, leaves and diamond patterns.
