A soft cream Kanchivaram brocade silk saree with the body woven all over in small gold zari leaf buttas, in neat rows. The wide border is woven in rich gold brocade zari with a fine checked pattern, with narrow bands of medallions along its edges. A central band shows lions and bulls with leafy trees and kalasams (pots), woven in gold zari on cream. The cream pallu repeats the brocade zari panel and the animal band, above a plain cream silk section, and it ends in tassels. A matching cream blouse piece comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and other auspicious occasions, and the cream and gold shade is a classic choice for bridal and ceremony wear.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: cream
Weave: brocade
Body: all-over gold zari leaf buttas
Border: wide gold brocade zari checked border with a central lion and bull band
Pallu: brocade zari panel and animal band over plain cream silk, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border. The leaf buttas, the brocade checked border and the lion and bull band are all woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft. The brocade weave gives the border a raised, rich zari finish.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple art and nature, including lions, bulls, leaves, medallions and kalasams.
