A bottle green Kanchivaram silk saree in the Korvai weave, with round gold zari buttas across the plain body. The wide border is woven in contrast pink, with two bands of paired peacocks in gold zari either side of a broad mustard panel, and an orange-red selvedge. The body meets the border in a soft, feathered edge. The pink pallu is richly woven in gold zari, with bands of small motifs above a herringbone and lattice pattern, and it ends in tassels. A matching pink blouse piece with a peacock zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: pink with a peacock zari border
Weave: Korvai
Body: bottle green with round gold zari buttas
Border: pink peacock zari bands with a mustard panel and an orange-red edge
Pallu: pink with bands of small motifs over a herringbone and lattice zari weave, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. In the Korvai technique, the body is woven in one colour and the border in another, and the two are joined by interlocking the weft threads. This gives a bold contrast where body meets border. The pallu is woven separately and joined in the same way. The buttas, the peacock bands and the pallu are woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft.

Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and nature, including peacocks, medallions, herringbone and lattice patterns.
