A soft lavender Kanchivaram silk saree in the Korvai weave, with round medallion buttas in silver and rose gold zari across the plain body. The wide maroon border is woven in antique gold zari with medallions and a fine geometric pattern, and it meets the body in a maroon temple (gopuram) edge. The maroon pallu carries two bands of paired peacocks with paisleys under a temple edge, above an all-over diamond lattice zari weave, and it ends in tassels. A matching maroon blouse piece with a gold zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and special occasions.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: maroon with a gold zari border
Weave: Korvai
Body: lavender with silver and rose gold zari buttas
Border: wide maroon antique gold zari border with a temple edge
Pallu: maroon with peacock and paisley bands over an all-over diamond lattice zari weave, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. In the Korvai technique, the body is woven in one colour and the border in another, and the two are joined by interlocking the weft threads. This gives a sharp contrast that runs in a zigzag temple line where body meets border. The pallu is woven separately and joined in the same way. The buttas, the border and the peacock bands in the pallu are woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and nature, including gopuram edges, peacocks, paisleys and medallions.
