A soft powder blue Gadwal silk saree with a plain, lustrous body. The body meets the border in a gold zari temple (gopuram) edge. The wide border is a shimmering plum and gold tissue, woven with silver zari bands of swans and florals, with small tapered buttas in purple and green set between them, and finished with an olive green selvedge. The pallu is the same plum and gold tissue, woven with a row of large silver zari paisleys, bands of swans, and flower buttas in blue, purple and green. A matching plum and gold tissue blouse piece with a silver zari swan border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and special occasions, and the powder blue with plum and gold is a graceful, unusual pairing.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: plum and gold tissue with a silver zari swan border
Body: plain powder blue
Border: wide plum and gold tissue with silver zari swan and floral bands and a gold temple edge
Pallu: plum and gold tissue with silver paisleys, swan bands and blue, purple and green flower buttas
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Gadwal weaving is known for its interlocked weave, in which the silk border and pallu are joined to the body with a tight interlocking of the weft threads. This gives the saree a light body and a rich, bold border. The tissue border glows and changes shade in the light, and the silver zari swans, paisleys and tapered buttas are woven on the loom with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Gadwal is a town in Telangana, and its weavers have made sarees for generations. The designs draw on nature and temple art, including swans, paisleys, flowers and the gopuram temple edge. Gadwal sarees are valued for being light to wear and for their bold contrast between body and border.
