A silver grey Kanchivaram silk saree with the body woven in a fine diamond lattice, dotted all over with tiny gold zari buttas that shimmer in the light. The wide border is a rich orange woven in gold zari with large peacocks and leaf motifs, framed by narrow zari bands. A fine striped band in pale gold leads from the body into the pallu. The orange pallu carries bands of small floral and leaf zari patterns above a broad field of fine diagonal zari lines, with a diamond floral pattern along the end. A matching plain orange blouse piece with a peacock zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and special occasions, and the cool silver with bright orange is a striking, modern take on a classic pairing.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: plain orange with a peacock zari border
Body: silver grey with a diamond lattice weave and tiny gold zari buttas
Border: wide orange gold zari peacock and leaf border with narrow zari bands
Pallu: orange with floral and leaf zari bands, diagonal zari lines and a diamond floral end
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border and a bold contrast between the silver body and the orange border. The diamond lattice and the tiny zari buttas are woven through the body, so it glows softly and changes shade in the light. The peacock and leaf border and the pallu bands are woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple art and nature, including peacocks, leaves, florals and diamond patterns.
