A teal green Kanchivaram silk saree woven all over with fine dotted lines in gold zari, set in a gentle wave pattern that gives the body a soft shimmer. A narrow border in deep teal runs along the edges, with a fine pink and gold zari band at the pallu end. The pallu is woven in a rich jaal of large roses, leaves and small blossoms in shades of green, teal, pink and blue, over a gold zari ground. A navy blue blouse piece, woven in fine vertical stripes of gold zari, comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and day functions, and the teal and navy pairing is a rich, graceful combination.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: navy blue with fine vertical gold zari stripes
Body: teal green with gold zari dotted wave lines
Border: narrow deep teal edge with a pink and gold zari band at the pallu end
Pallu: rose, leaf and blossom jaal in green, teal, pink and blue over a gold zari ground
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong join. The wave lines in the body are woven with fine gold zari, and the roses and leaves in the pallu are woven in coloured silk threads over a zari ground, with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on nature and temple art, including roses, leaves, blossoms and flowing creepers.
