A Kanchivaram silk saree in a vivid all-over check. The base is hot pink and magenta, crossed by bands of orange, bottle green, plum and olive that overlap into a rich, patchwork-like plaid. Fine gold zari lines run through the squares in short dashes, so the saree catches the light as it moves. The same check carries across the body and the pallu, with no border, which gives a clean, modern look to a traditional silk. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions, and it also works for daytime events where you want colour without heavy zari.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: the same check, from the saree’s own piece
Weave: Kanchivaram handloom silk
Body: all-over multicolour check, with gold zari dashes
Border: none
Pallu: the same check as the body
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Kanchipuram silk sarees are woven on handlooms from silk thread and zari. The weaver sets the coloured warp and weft threads so that they cross into squares, and the check builds up as the cloth is woven. On this saree the colours overlap to make new shades where they meet, and the gold zari is woven into the squares in fine dashes.

Kanchipuram, in Tamil Nadu, has been known for its silk sarees for centuries. Weaving families here have passed the craft down through generations, and the saree is woven with the same tools and techniques that they have always used. Kanchipuram silk carries a GI tag.
