A rich purple Kanchivaram silk saree with small floral gold zari buttas woven across the plain body. The wide border is woven in gold zari with a zigzag pattern and broad stripes, and a bright magenta selvedge sets it off. The pallu has two bands of paired peacocks in antique gold zari, above a finely striped zari panel, and it ends in tassels. A matching deep purple blouse piece with a zari stripe border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: deep purple with a zari stripe border
Body: plain purple with floral gold zari buttas
Border: wide gold zari zigzag and stripe border with a magenta edge
Pallu: two peacock bands over a striped zari panel, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border. The buttas, the zigzag border and the peacock bands in the pallu are all woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and nature, including peacocks, florals and zigzag patterns.
