Teal Blue Tussar Silk Banarasi Saree with Meenakari Zari Medallions and Purple Border

Woven on the Banaras loom, this Teal Blue Tussar Silk Saree pairs a cool sea-blue ground with the colour vocabulary of meenakari. Small gold and cream zari butis are scattered across the body in a close grid, and between them sit large round medallions — concentric rings of gold zari scallops enclosing a floral vine, with individual blooms picked out in pink, coral, mustard and green resham. That touch of colour inside the gold is what gives meena work its name, borrowed from enamelled jewellery.

The border is a contrast purple band carrying an all-over floral jaal in gold and silver zari, the two metals alternating so the scroll reads with depth rather than as a flat gold strip. Fine zari stripes run in the teal just inside it, easing the shift from body to border. The pallu changes ground entirely to ivory, where the same meenakari medallions and floral jaal are worked at a larger scale against the pale field. The unstitched blouse piece is a purple brocade covered in gold zari kalgas, finished with a purple and zari striped edge.

Meenakari on a Banarasi loom is brocade with colour let into the gold. The medallion outline and scallops are built in zari, and then coloured resham is introduced flower by flower inside that frame — each shade carried on its own small shuttle, worked in and cut, the way enamel is set into a gold jewel. It is slow because nothing is repeated automatically: the weaver reads the design from the naksha and places every colour by hand. The border uses sona-rupa work, gold and silver zari alternating within one jaal so the scroll gains dimension, and the butis across the body are woven in the same pass rather than added later.

This saree is woven in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh — the Banaras cluster, where handloom brocade has been worked for centuries and where meenakari, sona-rupa and kadhwa techniques are all part of the local repertoire. Tussar, known locally as munga silk, has become one of the grounds Banaras weavers favour for lighter, more everyday-luxury drapes.
