A deep maroon Kanjivaram silk saree with round gold zari buttas woven across the body. The wide border has a woven lattice pattern set between two bands of peacock motifs in gold zari. The pallu is richly woven in zari with a small checked pattern and bands of paisley and peacock motifs, and it ends in tassels. A matching maroon blouse piece with a peacock zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and other special occasions.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: matching maroon with a peacock zari border
Body: round zari buttas
Border: woven lattice pattern between peacock bands
Pallu: fully woven zari with a small checked pattern, paisley and peacock bands, and tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Kanjivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border. The round buttas on the body, the peacock bands and the lattice work in the border are all woven in zari on the loom. Each design takes careful setting of the warp and weft, and the finished weave has a raised, rich texture.

Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanjivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and nature, including peacocks, paisleys, lattice patterns and round medallions.
