A soft aqua blue Kanchivaram silk saree with round medallion buttas and small peacock buttas woven in gold and silver zari across the plain body. The wide purple border is woven in antique gold zari with large paisleys and peacocks, bands of diamond lattice and narrow magenta and orange accent stripes. The body meets the border in a fine striped edge. The purple pallu carries rows of elephants, peacocks and lotuses in antique gold zari, above an all-over diamond zari weave, and it ends in tassels. A matching deep purple blouse piece with a zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: deep purple with a zari border
Body: aqua blue with round and peacock zari buttas
Border: wide purple paisley and peacock zari border with magenta and orange stripes
Pallu: purple with elephant, peacock and lotus bands over an all-over diamond zari weave, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border and a bold contrast between body and border. The round and peacock buttas, the paisley border and the elephant and peacock bands in the pallu are all woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and nature, including peacocks, elephants, lotuses, paisleys and lattice patterns.
