A black ikat silk saree in a twill weave, with a soft, fluid fall and a fine diagonal texture. The body carries a panel of Patola-style ikat motifs: elephants with decorated howdahs, tigers in mustard yellow and red, and parrots, set in a lattice of red diamonds with touches of cream and sky blue, with the soft, feathered outlines that mark ikat. A plain black band separates the panel from the pallu. The pallu is a rich antique gold zari with a plain black band and tapering zari lines. Bottle green stripes with fine yellow lines run along both edges. A matching plain black blouse piece with green and gold stripes at the edge comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions, and the black with red and gold is a bold, striking choice.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: plain black with green and gold stripes at the edge
Weave: twill, with ikat motifs
Body: black with an ikat motif panel of elephants, tigers and parrots
Pallu: antique gold zari with a plain black band and tapering zari lines
Selvedge: bottle green stripes with fine yellow lines
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique in which sections of the yarn are tied and dyed in the planned colours before weaving. The weaver then aligns the threads on the loom so the pattern appears, with the softly feathered edges that mark ikat. A twill weave interlaces the threads in a diagonal pattern, which gives a softer, more fluid drape. The elephants, tigers and parrots on this saree are woven in bright red, mustard and cream against deep black.

Ikat is woven in several regions of India, and each has its own motifs and colours. This design draws on the Patola tradition, with its elephants, tigers, parrots and diamond lattices. Weaving families have passed this craft down through generations.
