A Kanchivaram silk saree in burnt orange. The body is woven with fine silver zari dashes that run in even rows, with soft wavy and diamond shapes in the plain silk between them, so the saree catches the light as it moves. A narrow magenta border runs along both edges. The pallu is a peach and copper zari ground woven with large roses in orange, olive and maroon, with leaves and small blossoms between them. A magenta blouse piece, striped with silver zari, comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions, and the orange with magenta and rose is a warm, festive combination.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: magenta with silver zari stripes
Weave: Kanchivaram handloom silk
Body: burnt orange with silver zari dashes and wavy diamond shapes
Border: narrow magenta, with a zari line
Pallu: peach and copper zari ground with woven roses in orange, olive and maroon
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Kanchipuram silk sarees are woven on handlooms from silk thread and zari. The weaver builds the pattern on the loom, thread by thread, so the zari and the motifs are part of the cloth itself. On this saree the zari is woven in short dashes across the body, and the pallu carries a floral design of roses and leaves in several colours on a zari ground.

Kanchipuram, in Tamil Nadu, has been known for its silk sarees for centuries. Weaving families here have passed the craft down through generations, and the saree is woven with the same tools and techniques that they have always used. Kanchipuram silk carries a GI tag.
