A soft cream gold Kanchivaram brocade silk saree with the body woven all over in a fine gold zari jaal of creepers, flowers and scrolls, which gives it a rich, antique shimmer. Small star-shaped flowers and tiny buds in slate blue are scattered across the body. The border is a slate blue woven in gold zari with a row of lotus motifs between fine herringbone and dotted bands, and a fine striped band separates it from the body. The pallu is woven in a gold and blue herringbone zari, in a soft grey-blue tone, and it ends in a plain edge. A matching slate blue blouse piece with a butterfly zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and special occasions, and the cream, gold and slate blue combination is a refined, understated choice.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: slate blue with a butterfly zari border
Weave: brocade with an all-over zari jaal
Body: cream gold with slate blue star flower and bud buttas
Border: slate blue butterfly zari border with herringbone and dotted bands
Pallu: gold and blue herringbone zari in a grey-blue tone
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border and a clear contrast between body and border. In the brocade body, fine zari is woven through the whole saree in a jaal pattern, so it glows softly and changes shade in the light. The lotus border and the herringbone pallu are woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft.

Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on nature and temple art, including creepers, flowers, butterflies and herringbone patterns.
