Cream Tissue Brocade Kanchivaram Silk Saree

A cream and gold Kanchivaram brocade silk saree with fine diagonal zari lines woven across the body in gold and silver, for a soft, glowing sheen. The wide pastel aqua border is woven in gold zari with large peacocks and paisleys, a diamond lattice panel and a band of elephants, and it is edged with a plain aqua selvedge. The pallu is richly woven in gold zari, with a row of elephants with patterned coverings above an all-over pattern of small leaf buttas in a diamond lattice, and it ends in tassels. A matching blouse piece in gold brocade with a pastel aqua peacock zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and special occasions, and the cream, gold and aqua shade is a soft choice for day functions.

Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border and a clear contrast. In this brocade, fine gold and silver zari lines are woven through the body, so the silk glows softly and changes shade in the light. The peacock border, the elephant bands and the leaf butta pallu are woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft.

Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and processions, including elephants, peacocks, paisleys and diamond lattice patterns.
