A soft cream Kanchivaram silk saree woven all over in very fine horizontal stripes of pale zari, which give the plain body a gentle shimmer. The wide border is woven in a shimmering red and gold tissue zari, with small tapered buttas in orange and olive set in neat rows. A narrow band of red zari scrolls and medallions separates the body from the pallu. The pallu is a rich red and gold, with a broad gold tissue band above an all-over diamond floral zari pattern. A matching red blouse piece with fine gold zari stripes and the same tapered buttas comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and special occasions, and the cream with red and gold is a classic bridal pairing.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: red with fine gold zari stripes and tapered buttas
Body: cream with fine horizontal zari stripes
Border: wide red gold tissue zari with tapered orange and olive buttas
Pallu: red with a gold tissue band and an all-over diamond floral zari pattern
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border and a bold contrast between the cream body and the red border. The tissue border is woven with fine zari through the weft, so it glows and shifts from red to gold in the light. The tapered buttas are woven in coloured thread, and the zari scrolls and the diamond pallu are woven on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple art and geometry, including scrolls, medallions, diamond lattices and florals.
