A twill ikat silk saree with a soft, fluid fall and a fine diagonal texture. The body is woven in a Patola-style geometric lattice of bottle green, navy and steel blue, outlined in silver-white, with the soft feathered edges that mark ikat. A band of antique gold zari with fine black lines separates the body from the plain black border. The black pallu carries rows of white ikat motifs and orange and red floral rosettes ringed in green, divided by fine white lines. A plain black blouse piece comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions, and the cool greens and blues against deep black and gold are a rich, striking combination.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: plain black
Weave: twill, with ikat motifs
Body: green, navy and steel blue geometric lattice with silver-white outlines
Border: plain black with an antique gold zari band
Pallu: black, with rows of white ikat motifs and orange and red floral rosettes
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique in which sections of the yarn are tied and dyed in the planned colours before weaving. The weaver then aligns the threads on the loom so the pattern appears, with the softly feathered edges that mark ikat. A twill weave interlaces the threads in a diagonal pattern, which gives a softer, more fluid drape. The lattice on this saree is woven in green, navy and steel blue against silver-white outlines, and the pallu carries orange and red rosettes on black.
Ikat is woven in several regions of India, and each has its own motifs and colours. This design draws on the Patola tradition, with its geometric lattices and rows of floral and figure motifs. Weaving families have passed this craft down through generations.
