A rich magenta purple Kanchivaram silk saree with small buttas of winged yalis, birds and scrolls woven in antique gold zari across the plain body. The border carries a row of large yalis in antique gold zari at the edge, framed by narrow bands of medallions, elephants and diagonal stripes. The pallu is richly woven in antique gold zari, with a temple edge, a band of yalis, birds and medallions, and a broad diamond lattice below, and it ends in tassels. A matching magenta purple blouse piece with a zari edge comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions, and it is a piece for lovers of traditional temple motifs.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: magenta purple with a zari edge
Body: plain magenta purple with antique gold yali, bird and scroll buttas
Border: row of large yalis with medallion and elephant bands
Pallu: temple edge, yali and bird band, and a broad diamond lattice, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border. The yalis, birds and medallions are woven in antique gold zari on the loom, and each figure takes careful setting of the warp and weft. The finished weave has a raised, rich texture.

Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple sculpture, including yalis, elephants, birds, medallions and the temple triangle edge.
