Purple Kanchivaram Silk Saree

A rich purple Kanchivaram silk saree woven all over with a fine zari mini check pattern, which gives the body a soft mauve and gold shimmer in the light. The border is a deep purple, with a temple edge, fine dotted zari lines and a flowing band of paisleys in antique gold zari. Between the bands sits a broad panel of olive gold, woven with fine horizontal zari lines. The purple pallu is woven in bands of fine zari patterns, with rows of peacocks and elephants and a vertically striped zari panel below, and it ends in tassels. A matching plain purple blouse piece with the same paisley border and olive gold panel comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions.

Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border. The fine zari mini checks cover the body, and the paisley bands, temple edge and pallu patterns are all woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft. The broad olive gold panel is woven with fine zari lines, which gives it a soft metallic glow against the purple.

Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and nature, including paisleys, peacocks, elephants and temple edges.
