A deep wine magenta Kanchivaram silk saree woven with a large check of orange and gold zari lines, which shimmers against the rich silk. The wide border is woven in antique gold zari with a band of peacocks and a band of elephants, framed by fine orange and red stripes with small ladder-like zari details. The pallu is woven in antique gold zari with a fine diamond pattern, below a peacock and stripe band that repeats the border. A matching plain wine blouse piece with a peacock and elephant zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions, and it is a piece for lovers of traditional temple motifs.

Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border. The zari checks, the peacock and elephant bands and the diamond pallu are all woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft. The finished weave has a raised, rich texture.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple art and processions, including peacocks, elephants and diamond patterns.
