A soft cream Kanchivaram silk saree with a plain, lustrous body that lets the border take centre stage. The wide black border is woven in thread work with a row of elephants in antique gold, framed by herringbone, zigzag and triangle bands, and it meets the body in a grey striped edge. The black pallu carries a band of elephants and paisleys above a broad silver and grey zari diamond lattice, and it ends in tassels. A matching black blouse piece with an elephant zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and special occasions, and the cream and black contrast is a classic, elegant choice.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: black with an elephant zari border
Weave: thread work
Body: plain cream silk
Border: wide black border with an antique gold elephant band and triangle bands
Pallu: black with an elephant and paisley band over a silver and grey diamond lattice, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border and a bold contrast between the cream body and the black border. In thread work, the motifs are woven into the border with extra threads on the loom, which gives a raised, textured finish. The elephants, the triangle bands and the diamond lattice in the pallu are all set with careful placement of the warp and weft.

Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and processions, including elephants, paisleys, triangle (temple) bands and diamond lattice patterns.
