A soft cream Kanchivaram silk saree with a lustrous body, woven all over with a fine dotted zari texture that catches the light. The wide mustard border carries a flowing line of roses in red thread work, with delicate pale gold creepers and small blossoms around them, and it is edged with a fresh green selvedge. The mustard pallu is woven in an all-over pattern of small red diamond and square buttas, with fine zari bands at its edge, and it ends in tassels. A matching mustard blouse piece with fine red stripes comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and day functions, and the cream and mustard combination is a bright, graceful choice.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: mustard with fine red stripes
Weave: thread work border
Body: cream with a fine dotted zari texture
Border: wide mustard border with red thread work roses and a green edge
Pallu: mustard with all-over red diamond and square buttas, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border and a bold contrast between the cream body and the mustard border. In the thread work border, the roses are woven on the loom with extra coloured threads, so they look like fine pen drawings against the silk. The dotted zari body and the diamond buttas in the pallu are set with careful placement of the warp and weft.

Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on nature and temple art, including roses, creepers, blossoms and geometric diamonds.
