A dual tone purple Kanchivaram silk saree with a soft magenta shimmer in the light. Small lotus buttas in gold zari are woven in neat rows across the body, and a larger motif of lotuses in circular frames sits at the border end. The saree has no heavy border, only a fine gold zari selvedge with a narrow striped edge. The rani pink pallu is woven with a multicolour floral jaal of creepers, roses and small blossoms in green, rust and antique gold zari, framed by a temple edge, and it ends in tassels. A matching rani pink blouse piece with small floral buttas comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and special occasions.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: rani pink with small floral buttas
Weave: dual tone
Body: purple with rows of gold zari lotus buttas and a lotus medallion motif at the border end
Border: fine gold zari selvedge with a narrow striped edge
Pallu: rani pink with a multicolour floral jaal and a temple edge, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong join and a bold contrast between the purple body and the pink pallu. The dual tone effect comes from weaving the warp and weft in two different colours, so the silk changes shade as it moves. The lotus buttas and the floral jaal in the pallu are woven on the loom in zari and coloured silk, with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on nature and temple art, including lotuses, roses, creepers and blossoms.
