A soft lavender Kanchivaram silk saree woven all over with a tone-on-tone jaal of climbing creepers, flowers, leaves and birds, which shows as a delicate shimmer in the light. A narrow border carries a row of small flowers in gold and mauve zari, edged with a lavender selvedge. The pallu is a pale cream with a fine diagonal weave, and it has a lavender zari checked panel and a floral border at its edge. A matching lavender blouse piece with the same jaal weave comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and special occasions, and the pastel shade makes it a good choice for day functions.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: lavender with an all-over jaal weave
Body: all-over tone-on-tone floral and bird jaal
Border: narrow floral zari border in gold and mauve with a lavender edge
Pallu: cream with a diagonal weave, a lavender zari checked panel and a floral edge
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border. In a jaal weave, the pattern covers the whole body in a connected network of motifs. Here the creepers, flowers and birds are woven in the same shade as the silk, so the design shows through texture and sheen. It takes careful setting of the warp and weft on the loom.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on nature and temple art, including creepers, lotuses, flowers and birds.
