A rich magenta purple Kanchivaram silk saree woven all over in fine vertical stripes of gold zari. The wide royal blue border is woven with a gold zari scroll band along each edge, with a broad gold zari stripe and fine zari lines between them. A narrow blue band with small medallions leads from the body into the pallu. The royal blue pallu is woven all over in a gold zari diamond lattice, with bands of medallions at its start. A matching plain royal blue blouse piece with a scroll zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions, and the purple and royal blue pairing is a rich, traditional choice.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: plain royal blue with a scroll zari border
Body: magenta purple with all-over vertical gold zari stripes
Border: royal blue with gold zari scroll bands and a broad zari stripe
Pallu: royal blue with an all-over gold zari diamond lattice and medallion bands
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border and a bold contrast between the purple body and the blue border. The zari stripes, the scroll bands and the diamond pallu are all woven in zari on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple art and geometry, including scrolls, medallions, stripes and diamond lattice patterns.
