A deep maroon Kanchivaram silk saree with round gold zari buttas woven across the plain body. A fine gold zari border with narrow motif bands runs along both sides, edged with a bright orange selvedge. The maroon pallu has two bands of elephants and creepers in antique gold zari, above an all-over pattern of small leaf buttas, and it ends in tassels. A matching bright orange blouse piece with a fine zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: bright orange with a fine zari border
Body: plain maroon with round gold zari buttas
Border: fine gold zari border with narrow motif bands and an orange edge
Pallu: elephant and creeper bands over all-over leaf buttas, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border. The round buttas, the elephant and creeper bands and the leaf buttas in the pallu are all woven in zari on the loom. Each design takes careful setting of the warp and weft, and the finished weave has a raised, rich texture.

Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on temple architecture and processions, including elephants, creepers, leaves and medallions.
