A dual tone maroon ikat silk saree in a twill weave, with a soft, fluid fall and a fine diagonal texture. The silk shifts between plum, wine and red in the light. The body is plain, with a narrow panel of ikat motifs along the border end. The panel and the pallu are woven in deep maroon with elephants wearing decorated howdahs, swans on blue water and red parrots, set in squares and framed by red lattice lines, with the soft, feathered outlines that mark ikat. A narrow antique gold zari band separates the body from the pallu, and a deep green selvedge edges the saree. A matching plain maroon blouse piece comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: plain dual tone maroon
Weave: twill, dual tone, with ikat motifs

Zari: narrow antique gold band between the body and pallu

Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique in which sections of the yarn are tied and dyed in the planned colours before weaving. The weaver then aligns the threads on the loom so the pattern appears, with the softly feathered edges that mark ikat. A twill weave interlaces the threads in a diagonal pattern, which gives a softer, more fluid drape. The dual tone effect comes from weaving the warp and weft in two different colours, so the silk changes shade as it moves. The elephants, swans and parrots are woven in bold, bright colours against deep maroon.
Ikat is woven in several regions of India, and each has its own motifs and colours. This design draws on the Patola tradition, with its elephants, swans, parrots and geometric lattice. Weaving families have passed this craft down through generations.
