A bright parrot green Kanchivaram silk saree woven with a large check of fine yellow zari lines. Small floral buttas, with teal blossoms and gold leaves, sit in the squares. The wide border is woven in gold and rose zari in a compact geometric pattern, with a narrow gold band at the edge and a teal selvedge. The pallu is woven all over in the same gold and rose zari, in a fine leaf-like pattern, and a green band separates it from the body. A matching plain parrot green blouse piece with a gold and rose zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals, day functions and special occasions, and the fresh green and gold is a cheerful, traditional choice.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: plain parrot green with a gold and rose zari border
Body: parrot green with yellow zari checks and teal and gold floral buttas
Border: wide gold and rose zari geometric border with a teal edge
Pallu: all-over gold and rose zari leaf pattern
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border. The checks and the floral buttas are woven on the loom in zari and coloured silk, and the border and pallu are woven in a dense gold and rose zari, with careful setting of the warp and weft.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on nature and temple art, including flowers, leaves and geometric patterns.
