A rich purple ikat silk saree woven with bold geometric motifs in magenta, green, yellow and lilac. The body shows diamond lattices with stylised birds, flowers and elephants, framed by fine striped and floral bands. A scalloped border in gold zari, embroidered by hand, runs along both sides and the pallu end. The pallu carries bands of ikat florals and ends in purple with fine gold zari stripes. A matching plain purple blouse piece with a gold zari border comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions.

Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: plain purple with a gold zari border
Body: ikat diamond lattice with birds, flowers and elephants
Border: hand-embroidered scalloped gold zari edging
Pallu: ikat floral bands, with purple and gold zari stripes at the end
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.

Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique in which sections of the yarn are tied and dyed in the planned colours before weaving. The weaver then aligns the threads on the loom so the pattern appears, with the softly feathered edges that mark ikat. It takes careful planning and skill, and the patterns on this saree are bold, geometric and colourful. Artisans then embroider the scalloped zari border by hand, which adds a raised, jewelled finish to the edges.

Ikat is woven in several regions of India, and each has its own motifs and colours. This design draws on the Patola tradition, with its diamond lattices, birds, flowers and elephants. Weaving families have passed this craft down through generations.
