A Kanchivaram silk saree in a rich purple. The body is woven with slanting stripes of gold zari creepers, with small floral buttas scattered between them. A wide antique gold zari border runs along both sides and the hem, with rows of pineapple motifs above a dense, textured band. The pallu is purple, woven with red floral vines, leaves and tiny gold zari buttas, which add a warm contrast to the purple. A purple blouse piece, woven all over with small gold zari dots and a matching zari border, comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions, and the purple with red and gold is a regal, traditional combination.

Kanchipuram silk sarees are woven on handlooms from silk thread and zari. The weaver builds the pattern on the loom, thread by thread, so the zari and the motifs are part of the cloth itself. On this saree the gold zari is woven into slanting creepers across the body, a wide border with pineapple motifs, and a pallu of red floral vines on purple.
Kanchipuram, in Tamil Nadu, has been known for its silk sarees for centuries. Weaving families here have passed the craft down through generations, and the saree is woven with the same tools and techniques that they have always used. Kanchipuram silk carries a GI tag.
