Red Twill Ikat Silk Saree with All-Over Motifs

A bright red ikat silk saree in a twill weave, with a soft, fluid fall and a fine diagonal texture. The body is woven all over in a lively Patola-style pattern of elephants with decorated howdahs, parrots, ducks and butterflies, set among flowers and creepers in cream, orange, olive green and sky blue, with the soft, feathered outlines that mark ikat. A narrow rose gold zari band separates the body from the pallu. The pallu is a plain red with a shimmering rose gold tissue panel and fine zari stripes that taper into tassel-like lines. Fine orange stripes run along both edges. A matching plain red blouse piece comes with the saree. It suits weddings, festivals and special occasions.

Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique in which sections of the yarn are tied and dyed in the planned colours before weaving. The weaver then aligns the threads on the loom so the pattern appears, with the softly feathered edges that mark ikat. A twill weave interlaces the threads in a diagonal pattern, which gives a softer, more fluid drape. The elephants, birds and butterflies on this saree are woven across the whole body in bright, bold colours.

Ikat is woven in several regions of India, and each has its own motifs and colours. This design draws on the Patola tradition, with its elephants, birds, butterflies and flowers. Weaving families have passed this craft down through generations.
