A dusty rosewood maroon, sheer enough to see the light through — this Kora Jamdani Saree carries its pattern in diagonals. Waving vines in antique gold zari run corner to corner across the body, each one shadowed by a fine dotted line in ivory, and between them sit small leaf-sprig butas worked in resham: rani pink, orange, mustard, beige and pale grey, placed so no two adjacent sprigs repeat a colour. The effect is a drape that reads as striped from a distance and as scattered flowers up close.

The border is a gold zari band set with a diamond lattice, filled alternately with ivory blossoms and small pink and orange florets, and closed along the selvedge by a fine red satin piping. The pallu turns to the traditional Banarasi kalga — large paisleys in gold and ivory zari, their bodies filled with geometric rosettes and pinwheels, framed by the same lattice band. The unstitched blouse piece is in matching rosewood kora with the zari border band and scattered butas repeated.

Jamdani is the most labour-intensive way to pattern a handloom. There is no jacquard driving the design — the weaver works from the naksha and inserts each motif by hand with a small bobbin, one buta at a time, as the ground is being woven. Because every colour is carried only across its own motif and the loose threads are trimmed on the reverse, the technique is also called cutwork: the mark of a real jamdani is those cut ends behind the buta rather than long floats. On a sheer kora ground the discipline is doubled, since any unevenness in tension shows immediately through the transparency. The diagonal vines here are the harder part still, as a design set on the bias has to be advanced by a fixed step on every pick to keep its angle true down five and a half metres.

This saree is woven in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh — the Banaras cluster, where handloom brocade and jamdani have been worked for centuries. Kora, the crisp undegummed silk, is one of the grounds Banaras weavers favour for lighter drapes, letting jamdani butas read as if they are floating on air rather than sitting on solid silk.
