A bright lemon yellow Kanchivaram silk saree woven with a large check pattern in soft peach and gold lines, with small floral buttas inside each square. The wide powder blue border carries a tone-on-tone floral creeper, with lotuses, leaves and birds woven in pale gold zari, and it is edged with a fine sage green selvedge. The pallu is a soft sage green with a fine diamond zari weave, framed by a band of the same floral creeper at its edge, and it ends in tassels. A matching powder blue blouse piece with the floral creeper comes with the saree. It suits weddings, receptions, festivals and day functions, and the fresh yellow and blue combination is a bright choice for daytime wear.
Saree length: 5.5 metres, plus a 0.8 metre blouse piece
Blouse: powder blue with a floral creeper border
Body: lemon yellow with a peach and gold check pattern and small buttas
Border: wide powder blue floral creeper with lotuses, leaves and birds
Pallu: sage green with a fine diamond zari weave and a floral creeper edge, with tassels
Care: dry clean only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, and refold it every few months.
Kanchivaram weaving is one of India’s oldest silk traditions. The body, border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked, which gives a strong border and a bold contrast between body, border and pallu. The checks, the buttas and the floral creeper are all woven on the loom, with careful setting of the warp and weft. The creeper is woven in a pale gold zari that sits softly on the blue silk.
Kanchipuram is a temple town in Tamil Nadu and the home of Kanchivaram silk. Weaving families there have passed the craft down through generations. The designs draw on nature and temple art, including lotuses, creepers, leaves and birds.
